Staff at Freshney Place will be taking part in Makaton training to develop their communication skills to further improve customer service.
Makaton Foundation Training is a multi-modal language programme which comprises of speech, signs and symbols to advance communication, language and literacy skills, whilst building confidence and social skills. Staff will learn some of the core Makaton signs and symbols through different games and activities which will assist them in dealing with people with or without any learning and communication difficulties.
To further support customers and their families, Freshney Place holds a weekly autism hour every Saturday morning until 10am, and are also planning to host an autism crafts event in October.
The training will be led by the experienced tutor, Rachel Downs, who has worked in the education sector teaching Makaton through music, speaking and listening skills as part of the English Nation Curriculum. She runs regular singalong and sign baby and toddler groups as well as running musical interaction sessions with adults with learning difficulties in residential care.
Makaton differs to British Sign Language BSL as it’s designed to support spoken language for people with learning or communication difficulties. BSL is a language with its own structure and grammar and uses hand signs, body language, facial expressions and lip patterns.
On Friday 16th August between 4pm and 5.30pm, Sing Sign Train will be using the Community Hub to perform Makaton Foundation Training (sign language).
As part of our Get Active in August celebrations, Freshney Place will be hosting Table Tennis in the Community Hub each weekend in August, commencing on Saturday 17th.
Grimsby in Bloom will be hosting a craft session in the Community Hub, creating waterproof bunting.

Climb 4 LTD are hosting a decades experience: Back in Time 1940’s workshop at Freshney Place in the community hub on Wednesday 17th July, between 10am and 12pm.
Climb 4 LTD has been supported by the Heritage Fund to run interactive workshops in the North East Lincolnshire area. Focusing on the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s, celebrating our area’s diverse history.

Grimsby in Bloom recently used the community hub to host their fabulous bunting craft workshop!
If you would like to get involved in creating beautiful bunting and banners, get in touch with Grimsby in Bloom, who will be hosting their next craft workshop on Friday 2nd August.
Also, if you have oil cloth that you don’t use, feel free to bring it to the Customer Service Desk before the 2nd August, as it can be used to make the beautiful banners.

Friendship at Home will be using the Community Hub on Wednesday 22nd May from 9.30am – 12.30pm.
The morning will consist of a volunteer management meeting for volunteer work.
St. Andrews Hospice will be visiting the Community Hub on Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th May in support of Dying Matters Awareness week. It gives an unparalleled opportunity to place the importance of talking about dying, death and bereavement firmly on the national agenda.
