New Voice of BBC Radio Humberside

When you listen to the radio, do you ever think…..I’d love to have a go at that?  Well, now is your chance!

BBC Radio Humberside are hosting auditions to find a new voice on the airwaves! Auditions will take place in the Community Hub at Freshney Place on Saturday 28th September, between 10.00am and 5.30pm. Registration is from 9:30am.

Each candidate will have 60 seconds to tell a story about anything they like, serious or funny. It could be something that happened to them, or someone they know. The story will be told in front of a panel of judges, including Kofi Smiles (BBC Radio Humberside Presenter), Katy Noone (BBC Radio Humberside Presenter) and Gemma Oaten (Actress and Public Speaker).

If you are 18 years or over and would like the opportunity to audition, or know anyone who would, just visit Freshney Place on Saturday 28th September.  We can’t wait to meet you!

BBC Radio Humberside will try and see as many people as possible, but unfortunately can’t guarantee they will be able to see everyone. Those coming along for auditions will need to bring a recent photo of them.

Get ready for a spooktacular Halloween at Freshney Place!

Freshney Place Shopping Centre is inviting families to join us for a FREE, epic weekend of spooktacular fun to celebrate Halloween!

On Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October between 11am and 3pm, children can learn how to be extra spooky scientists with a number of wonderful workshops hosted by fun experts. Kids will have a great time making frightful slime, crazy candyfloss and using ooey-gooey chemistry potions.

Look out for the mad scientist’s sidekick, who will be roaming through the centre giving mind-blowing science facts and visual interactive demonstrations, but the mayhem won’t stop there! Visitors can challenge themselves, and each other, to see how much mad energy they can create on a crazy power pedlar bike!

And there’s more – customers can take part in a haunting Halloween hunt – or can transform their little monsters into real-life, eerie characters with the fanatical face painter! So, get ready for a thrilling weekend with Freshney Place that will shock the kids and adults alike!

Freshney Place staff undertaking training to improve customer service

Staff at Freshney Place will be taking part in Makaton training to develop their communication skills to further improve customer service.

Makaton Foundation Training is a multi-modal language programme which comprises of speech, signs and symbols to advance communication, language and literacy skills, whilst building confidence and social skills. Staff will learn some of the core Makaton signs and symbols through different games and activities which will assist them in dealing with people with or without any learning and communication difficulties.

To further support customers and their families, Freshney Place holds a weekly autism hour every Saturday morning until 10am, and are also planning to host an autism crafts event in October.

The training will be led by the experienced tutor, Rachel Downs, who has worked in the education sector teaching Makaton through music, speaking and listening skills as part of the English Nation Curriculum. She runs regular singalong and sign baby and toddler groups as well as running musical interaction sessions with adults with learning difficulties in residential care.

Makaton differs to British Sign Language BSL as it’s designed to support spoken language for people with learning or communication difficulties. BSL is a language with its own structure and grammar and uses hand signs, body language, facial expressions and lip patterns.

Get Active in August

Freshney Place is inviting families and friends to Get Active this August with a number of fun, energetic events taking place in the centre during the month.  The free activities and classic games will be hosted in Market Square, near Starbucks from 1am to 3pm,  to encourage the community to have a go whilst honing their fitness skills.

The playful entertainment is designed to get the whole family on board and will kick off on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th with a surf simulator so, if you haven’t managed to get to the seaside yet this will be a chance to experience catching those big waves! Participants can test their balance and stamina as the board twists and tilts like a real life surfboard, (without the water), testing how long they can stay upright.

On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th, keen climbers can try out their moves on a gripping bouldering wall. Suitable for all ages and abilities, families will be able to race each other to the end, testing out their speed and strength. Finally on the last weekend of August a Golf Simulator will give budding golf pro’s a chance to score a hole in one!

During the events there will also be a selection of family friendly games such as a giant snakes and ladders, jumbo hi-tower, big 4 and table tennis, to help get everyone in the mood.

British Heart Foundation will be hosting a CPR event in Market Square near Starbucks on Tuesday 23rd July from 10am to 3pm.

This is a FREE event for all to take part in. If you pass the course, you will receive a certificate and wristband!
